Camphor Laurel & Golden Camphor Burl
A distinctive natural aroma, warm earthy colors, and beautifully intricate grain. Camphor Wood has a long history in Japanese craftsmanship. Its highly figured burl wood, known as Golden Camphor Burl, offers extraordinary natural patterns for musical instruments, furniture, and decorative woodworking.
Japanese Camphor Wood, known as Kusunoki in Japan, comes from Cinnamomum camphora, an evergreen hardwood tree in the laurel family.
The species grows in warm regions of Japan and other parts of East Asia. Camphor trees can grow to impressive sizes, and some ancient specimens are preserved as sacred trees at Japanese shrines and temples.
The wood is recognized for its distinctive camphor-like aroma and has traditionally been used for furniture, storage chests, carving, and specialty wooden objects.
Camphor Wood ranges from relatively subtle grain to exceptionally decorative burl figure, offering different appearances for woodworking applications.
Camphor Wood commonly displays yellowish-brown to reddish-brown tones. Some pieces may also contain grayish or olive-colored areas. Color varies between individual boards.
Grain may be straight, interlocked, or wavy. Texture varies, and highly figured pieces can produce distinctive decorative patterns.
A moderately dense hardwood that can generally be shaped, machined, and carved. Interlocked grain may require extra care during cutting.
Camphor Wood has a characteristic scent associated with its natural aromatic compounds. The aroma may be particularly noticeable on freshly cut surfaces.
Camphor Burl is a decorative wood figure associated with unusual, burl-like growth in the tree.
Unlike ordinary straight-grained lumber, burl wood can display highly irregular patterns, swirling grain, small eye-like markings, and complex natural color variations.
Pieces showing attractive golden tones and pronounced burl figure are sometimes marketed as Golden Camphor Burl.
Irregular wood fibers can produce swirling, eye-like, and highly decorative natural patterns.
Changing light reflections can create striking contrast and an impression of depth across the surface.
Golden, reddish-brown, and earthy tones may appear together, giving each piece a distinctive appearance.
No two burl pieces are identical. Figure distribution, color, and usable dimensions vary naturally.
Camphor Burl is not a separate botanical species. It describes wood with distinctive burl figure. Highly figured pieces may contain irregular grain, voids, or natural cracks. Material condition should be evaluated before use.
One of the defining characteristics of Camphor Wood is its distinctive aroma, associated with naturally occurring aromatic compounds.
Camphor has historically been used in products intended to protect stored clothing from insects. Camphor Wood has also been used for storage chests, wooden boxes, and cabinetry.
In Japanese craftsmanship, Camphor Wood has been used for carving, including Buddhist sculptures, as well as furniture and traditional wooden objects.
Its combination of natural aroma, workable texture, and historical significance makes Camphor Wood a distinctive material for specialty projects.
The presence of a camphor-like scent does not guarantee a measurable level of insect protection when the wood is used in furniture or storage. Aroma intensity varies with the specimen, finish, and environment.
Camphor trees can grow to substantial sizes, but pieces with strong burl figure, suitable dimensions, and sound material condition are not available from every tree.
Broad, highly figured pieces with usable surfaces can be particularly attractive for instrument decoration, specialty furniture, and fine woodworking.
At Maikai Wood Hawaii, we evaluate material according to its visual characteristics, figure, dimensions, and condition.
Consider the density, clarity, and visual depth of the burl patterns.
Evaluate natural golden and brown tones, contrast, and overall visual balance.
Check usable length, width, thickness, and suitability for guitar tops, veneers, or furniture projects.
Inspect for cracks, natural voids, knots, warping, and moisture content.
We use our own grading scale: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 5A+ Master Grade.
For Camphor Burl, grading considers the distinctive appearance of burl figure as well as material condition, rather than curl intensity alone.
Our grades are proprietary evaluations, not a universal industry standard. Please review product photographs and specifications carefully.
Camphor Wood can be considered for musical instruments when the dimensions and physical properties of the material are suitable.
Highly figured Camphor Burl is particularly appealing for decorative electric guitar and bass tops, where its intricate grain patterns can become a central visual feature.
Thin decorative tops can showcase burl figure while being combined with a separate body wood.
Straight-grained Camphor Wood may also be considered for selected body components or other instrument parts, depending on density, stiffness, grain orientation, and material condition.
Camphor instruments are sometimes described as having a warm or mellow sound. These descriptions should not be treated as guaranteed properties of the species.
Actual sound depends on instrument design, wood properties, thickness, pickups, and construction.
Burl wood has irregular grain and may contain natural defects. A piece suitable for decorative applications is not necessarily suitable as a structural component. Inspect material carefully before use.
Camphor Wood is generally workable with conventional woodworking tools, but interlocked grain and burl figure can create additional machining challenges.
Changes in grain direction may cause tear-out, especially in highly figured sections. Sharp tools, controlled feed rates, and light cutting passes can help achieve a clean finish.
During drying, the risk of warping and checking depends on board thickness, grain orientation, initial moisture content, and drying conditions.
Camphor Wood contains natural aromatic compounds, and its drying behavior should be assessed according to the individual material rather than a fixed schedule.
Before precision instrument making or fine woodworking, check moisture content and dimensional stability. Allow the material to acclimate to the workshop environment.
A two-month drying estimate for boards 20–30 mm thick cannot be applied reliably to every piece of Camphor Wood. Actual moisture measurements and material stability should take priority.
Camphor dust and aromatic compounds may cause irritation in sensitive individuals. Use appropriate dust extraction, ventilation, and personal protective equipment during machining.
Decorative guitar and bass tops, body caps, and custom instrument components featuring intricate Camphor Burl figure.
Traditional carving, Buddhist sculptures, and decorative wooden artwork using suitable Camphor Wood.
Furniture accents, storage chests, cabinets, decorative panels, and specialty boxes.
Pen blanks, wooden accessories, turned objects, knife handle scales, and custom craft projects.
Camphor Wood combines natural aromatic character, warm colors, and a long tradition in Japanese woodworking.
Golden Camphor Burl adds another dimension through its intricate grain patterns and distinctive visual depth. Each piece offers a unique expression of natural wood.
At Maikai Wood Hawaii, we value the individual character of every piece and offer specialty materials for luthiers, instrument makers, and woodworkers around the world.
