What Is Hawaiian Koa?
Why Is Everyone So Fascinated by Koa?
What Is Koa?
Hawaiian Koa (Acacia koa) is a remarkable wood that has been treasured by the people of Hawaii for centuries.
Traditionally used for outrigger canoes, paddles, boxes, and furniture, Koa is now highly valued worldwide as a premium tonewood for ukuleles and guitars.
It is known for its rich, warm tonal character and distinctive natural beauty.
The Rarity of Hawaiian Koa
Hawaiian Koa is a tree species native to Hawaii, with a naturally limited geographic range and a finite supply of harvestable timber.
Historical logging and changes in land use have affected Koa forests. High-quality lumber displaying exceptional curly figure is particularly rare and highly sought after.
Today, forest conservation and reforestation initiatives are helping support the future of this valuable Hawaiian resource.
Our Koa Grading System
Our grading system is based on decades of experience in the wood industry. We evaluate Hawaiian Koa primarily by the strength, depth, and visibility of its curly figure, providing a consistent reference to help customers compare and select lumber.
Little or no curl,
with subtle figuring
Moderate curl
visible at certain angles
Prominent curl
visible from most angles
Deep, strong,
highly defined curl
Exceptionally rare,
outstanding curly figure
Note: These grades are based on our own grading standards. As Koa is a natural material, color, grain patterns, and the appearance of curl may vary depending on the individual piece and lighting conditions.
Moisture Content & Drying
Some of our lumber comes from naturally fallen trees or logs that have been drying for extended periods after harvesting. Moisture content varies from piece to piece. Some lumber may be ready for processing, while other pieces may require additional drying or acclimatization.
Careful drying and gradual moisture adjustment help minimize the risk of checking, cracking, and warping.
Stack Properly
Use stickers between boards to allow air to circulate freely.
Ensure Ventilation
Avoid direct sunlight and sudden changes in temperature or humidity.
Circulate Air
Use fans when necessary to maintain gentle and consistent airflow.
Minimize Warping
Stack lumber carefully and use appropriate weights when needed.
Recommended Uses
With its beautiful grain and excellent versatility, Hawaiian Koa is suitable for a wide range of applications, from fine musical instruments to decorative woodworking and handcrafted accessories.
