What is Big Leaf Maple?


About the material

Bigleaf maple ( Acer macrophyllum )
This maple grows wild on the west coast of North America.

especially:

  • Flame (Tiger grain)

  • Quilt (wavy heather)

This wood has earned a worldwide reputation as an electric guitar material.


About scarcity

Figured wood has a low natural occurrence rate;
Grades above 5A are extremely rare.


Acoustic characteristics

  • Bright and clear tone

  • Fast attack

  • Great compatibility with both humbuckers and single-ended pickups


Grade Criteria

  • 1A/2A [Bottom] : No curl to very slight curl
  • 3A [Medium] : Medium curls that can be seen depending on the angle
  • 4A [Medium and Upper] : Strong curls that are clearly visible from any angle
  • 5A [Top] : Deep and strong curls
  • 5A+ [Superb] : Extremely rare, exquisite curls, Master Grade

About drying

Maple is somewhat hard,
Be careful not to let it warp when it dries.
